QuoVadis Welcomes Reform of Electronic Transactions Act (ETA)
29 Nov 2010

The Bermuda Government is seeking to update the Electronic Transactions Act 1999 (ETA).

Bermuda was one of the first countries in the world to adopt legislation establishing the legal equivalency of electronic records and transactions with their paper counterparts. The ETA establishes standards for the authorisation of Certification Services Providers (CSPs) to issue accredited certificates used to identify their holders online and to create electronic signatures. The ETA also includes a standard of practice for e-commerce service providers associated with the island.

Given the fast pace of change in the Internet sector, and the continuing evolution of legal and regulatory frameworks affecting online activities, the Bermuda Government has sought advice on possible updates and improvements to the ETA.  Following deliberations of an Advisory Committee on the ETA reform, Government is now conducting consultations with the broader public and business sector.

  •  The Business Technology Division of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce is hosting a presentation for business on December 2nd from 1:30 to 3:00 pm.
  •  A general meeting for the public will take place December 6th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, also at the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce.
  •  Consultation materials are also available online, and electronic submissions are welcomed.  Please visit the ETA website here.

QuoVadis has been active in both the creation of the original ETA and the recent Advisory Committee, and welcomes this reform initiative.

Founded in Bermuda in 1999, QuoVadis has been an Authorised CSP since the Certification Services Providers schedules were added to the ETA in 2002.

In addition, QuoVadis is a Qualified CSP under the equivalent European standards in Switzerland and the Netherlands, and is an accredited provider under the Swiss SuisseID and Dutch PKI Overheid and e-Herkenning electronic ID programmes.

QuoVadis also hold certifications under the AICPA/CICA WebTrust for Certification Authories and WebTrust for Extended Validation schemes.
